1995 Camaro, $1800 or Best Offer! [Jul. 12th, 2009|07:01 pm]
Graduate Students at Florida State University

I need to sell my car ASAP. Less than 90,000 miles. Needs a new transmission, but that won't set you back more than $1200. Should be able to get one at $1000. Total, you'd be spending tops $3000, and she's Blue-Booked around $3500.

Great running condition otherwise. A few cosmetic flaws, but nothing tragic by any means. She's a heavy car that wants to be good to you.

Tallahassee, 32304.

Has anybody had McDowell as a professor?  I've never had him but I have him as a choice for my comps committee, and I'd like to know anybody's experiences?

I can tell this comm's kinda dead, but wth it's worth a shot.

Senior at a school down at the bottom of the state, heading to the College of Law in August.  What do I need to know about the academic environment?

Rally this Saturday [Nov. 12th, 2008|12:39 pm]
Graduate Students at Florida State University

Hi everyone, I wanted to let everyone know about a march and protest that will be happening this weekend! It's not strictly related to FSU, but seeing as we grad students are members of the Tallahassee community, I thought it would be good to get the word out.

Join the Impact Rally for Gay Rights

March begins at Westcott at FSU at noon.

Rally at the Old Capitol at 12:30

Come to the Join the Impact Tallahassee rally, Saturday, November 15 at 1:30PM at City Hall and raise awareness of the need to right a wrong. This rally is part of a national event drawing attention to the votes in California, Florida, Arizona, and Arkansas.

While protests will make us somewhat visible, that is far from enough. What we need to do is develop strategies to obtain these rights. This Join the Impact rally gives us the opportunity to begin our discussions.

The rally will feature local speakers and musicians.

For more information, contact Isabelle Potts or Susan Gage at (850) 224-8188 or ipcbavs@yahoo.com.

The Moon? [Sep. 5th, 2008|08:36 pm]

[music |Death Cab for Cutie - Marching Bands of Manhattan | Scrobbled by Last.fm]

Hi everyone,

I'm Ian, pursuing my MLIS via distance learning from SW Florida. I was wondering if anyone actually in Tallahassee could tell me anything about The Moon as a concert venue. My wife and I are going to try to get up there for the Nov 2 Drive By Truckers/The Hold Steady show, and it might be nice to have a sense of what the venue is like. (OK, I just found moonevents.com, which answers some of that, but it's always nice to hear from real humans.) Also, it looks from the Club Downunder web-site like the show is a Union Productions show, and so might be free for students (like myself)? If anyone has firm knowledge of that, and could give me a sense of how that works ... just show up with my ID, or what? Should I order a ticket for my wife? Those are the questions that come to mind right now, but information's always appreciated. Thanks for taking the time!

(I may well cross-post this to fsu_coi, though I have not yet. And I'll probably end up calling Club Downunder some time on Monday anyway, but I'd still enjoy hearing folk's impressions of the venue. Thanks!)

GAU [Aug. 15th, 2008|03:24 pm]
Graduate Students at Florida State University

As I mentioned before in this space, Graduate Assistants at FSU are in the middle of a campaign to form a union. We hope to be able to advocate for health insurance, work rules and conditions, class caps, and so on. If you have any interest in helping out in this effort, or just want more information, please get in contact with me, Jason Leto, at jmleto@gmail.com. I am a graduate employee at FSU, and also the union (called Graduate Assistants United, or GAU) organizing chair.

This is a great way for graduate assistants to be able to have a say in their work and working conditions, and once formed, will give all GAs a chance to improve their lives by working together toward common goals. In my experience, being involved in the campaign is also a great way to meet other graduate employees/students outside of your department or circle of friends. I hope to hear from other GAs soon!

And good luck, everyone, on the beginning of the semester...

Hi Everybody! [Jun. 24th, 2008|11:28 pm]
Graduate Students at Florida State University

I'll be attending FSU in the fall working on my MA in Russian and Eastern European Studies. I'm excited but this will definitely be a new experience for me. I've never been to Florida before. I just have a few general questions about the campus and Tallahassee. How hard are the campus and the city to navigate as a pedestrian? How is the bus system? Do you think it's hard to meet people? Anyone know anything about Christian ministries on campus? As a newbie is there anything I just have to know? Any advice is more than welcome. Thanks.

In State Tuition [May. 16th, 2008|10:43 am]
Graduate Students at Florida State University

Hey everyone! I am looking at FSU for a Social Work MSW, and possibly a PhD.

Can anyone tell me about the process for getting in state tuition for an out of state transfer? The rules seem very strict, has anyone successfully gotten this? If so, how did you do it? :-)

Other than buying a house, or working 30 hours a week for a year, are there any other quick methods to assure in state tuition?

Hi everyone!

My name's Carolyn and I applied very late in the game for the Master's in Media and Communication Studies program. As a result, I just learned I was accepted, but totally missed the boat on most funding (except for loans). Now I'm doing the mental debate of escaping Philadelphia to go back to school and rack up the debt, or stick with the more traditional/boring life I have now and you know, keep my debt to a minimum.

Is anyone else here in this program? Know anyone who is? Any thoughts on it? I'm trying to plan a visit to get down and visit the campus at the end of June before making any decisions, so if you have any suggestions for when I'm down here that would be great too.
